MELVIN
A Temporary Interactive Kinetic Sculpture
Melvin (2021) is a temporary interactive kinetic sculpture co-created with Amy Malouf that merges industrial strength with the quiet poetry of nature.
Standing 14 feet tall and spanning 10 feet in diameter, the piece was crafted from steel and organic materials, creating a dynamic dialogue between the industrial and the natural world.
Installed for a private event on Fox Island, Alaska, Melvin responded to its environment through gentle movement of hanging spruce bows, inviting participants to engage with the sculpture by spinning the bows from the outside or watching the structure spin overhead while sitting inside. When witnessed from inside, the spinning bows created a disorienting visual effect that further blurred the line between what we think we know and what is known.
